Brand New Start
“We had very little money coming in and the bills just got out of hand”
Peter lives with his wife and two daughters and works as a taxi driver. When his father passed away Peter became depressed and struggled to cope. He began to get behind with his mortgage and loan repayments, and the rising debt forced him to sell his taxi. He had to start hiring a taxi, which was unaffordable, and the debt problems worsened. Repossession proceedings were started against the family home.
DHA advisors assessed Peter's housing and financial problems and discovered that his mortgage and bills were totally unaffordable. With careful support from a caseworker Peter and his wife made a joint homeless application, which was accepted by the local authority and resulted in greatly reduced rent. The advice team identified that Peter's outstanding priority debts were still a major problem. The case was put to the debt advice team, who set up affordable repayment proposals and liased and negotiated with Peter's creditors on Peter's behalf.
Peter is now happily moving on with his life. He is working again and has moved into a new property. "When I came to DHA I was in a really bad way. People were constantly chasing me and I had no idea what to do. I am now in a new place with the family and we feel much more settled and happy. I cannot say how thankful we are for the advice and phone calls made on our behalf by people who just want to help. They made things seem not so bad and simple to understand. I don't know what would have happened if they were not there helping me through the problems. They were so good, and I would recommend them to anyone."
